Prime Minister Theresa May has set out her plans for a strong withdrawal from the EU and has confirmed her wish for a swift reciprocal agreement with the 27 EU countries as it relates to the living and working rights of current UK nationals located in EU countries and vice versa. This could have been a chance for the prime minister – as campaigners have demanded – to make a unilateral guarantee that the rights of the 3 million EU citizens living the UK would be maintained after Brexit.
For the time being, though, they look set to remain what the home secretary recently referred to as “negotiating capital”. May said on Tuesday that the government wants to guarantee their rights – and those of British citizens on the continent – “as early as we can”.
