10 things learned from a 40-year history in global relocation

Elon Musk said, "If you're trying to create a company, it's like baking a cake. You have to have all the ingredients in the right proportion."

There is a lot of advice out there in the world, and the relocation industry certainly has its own share of wise pieces of sage wisdom.

Switzerland has been a top destination for strong businesses to set up expatriate assignments. One of our long-time partners in Switzerland is Packimpex. Ernst Joerg is currently the chairman of the company after turning over ownership and management to his son, Marcel. In this article, Ernst reflects on 10 things that he has learned over 40 years running the company. In my opinion, all 10 are critical elements to stay focused on if you want to be a successful company in the global mobility industry in the future.

fter starting my own company, more than 40 years ago, I want to share my thoughts on what it takes to create a successful international relocation company. 1.   Listen to the market We started Packimpex with a packer and an office worker in 1977. The Swiss market was dominated by long established local movers. None of them as specialized in international moving only. None of them operated with branch offices. I saw a market need for both. But later on, the market required a variety of relocation services like destination services, rental furniture and corporate apartment management. But you can only find out these things when you listen to the changing needs of your customers.
