The scariest "monsters" for your mobility program?

Halloween continues to grow as a holiday from a participation and retail perspective. For many the decorating, candy, and costumes have become a lifestyle! Despite 73% of respondents saying that economic challenges will impact their Halloween shopping, the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) annual Halloween consumer survey revealed that total Halloween spending in 2023 was expected to reach a record $12.2 billion, exceeding the previous year’s record of $10.6 billion.

That said, monsters are a part of the Halloween vibe. Last year, we embraced the theme of monsters, asking which are the biggest monsters related to your mobility programs? These would be the things that seem to plague you and your team most, creating ongoing challenges that have to be addressed by your program. While we suggested that "exceptions" for many programs are notoriously scary, time-consuming, and create almost a lose-lose situation, others said supply chain nightmares were consistently haunting their program. There is a big list of additional options too. How about international remote work requests, nagging immigration compliance requirements, taxing tax infractions, last second rush relocation requests, policy benchmarking and reviews?

Over the last few years, so many programs have been focused on improving the employee experience and trying to add flexibility for employees, while still managing costs. Getting more efficient was the top priority as we entered Q1 2023 for mobility programs, per our Trends Report. 70% of participants said they need to evaluate and restructure processes to create more efficient mobility management practices within their program. Does that mean "inefficiency" was the biggest monster for mobility in 2023?

We thought it would be fun to take another look at the post from last year and then relaunch a little poll to find out more from you. Evaluate your program and think about what's the most intimidating challenge that you want to slay. What's your mobility program's biggest and scariest monster? Vote here and let us know!

Spooky season is here! As Halloween approaches, let's take a theme from this upcoming holiday and connect it to global mobility. If I asked you to generate a list of the "monsters of mobility", what issues would you name as those monsters? Think about it...if monsters are those big hairy issues that creep up on our mobility work, what scares you the most? Benefit costs, rush moves, exceeding move budgets, escalation issues, rogue suppliers, stealth expats, compliance issues, or maybe even a failed assignment? How about poor technology or lack of reporting across your program? Which issues are particularly threatening or terrifying? There is a huge variety of monsters in the modern horror landscape. At this time of year, the typical characters that come to mind are Frankenstein, witches, werewolves, ghosts, zombies, slashers like Jason, and the Headless Horsemen.
