Let's talk about intern programs

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) just published their Job Outlook 2024 report. Overall, new graduades are entering a very strong job market according to their data. However, for this coming batch of summer interns, (2024 graduates completing post-grad internships over the summer, and 2025 graduates completing internships before their final year of school), the outlook is mixed. Some industries are slowing down their intern hiring, citing budget cuts or an uncertain economy. Others—especially social services, engineering, and construction—remain committed to increasing intern hiring.

Companies understand that intern programs help to keep talent pipelines full. When employers are deciding between candidates who are otherwise equally qualified for the same position, having an internship is often the deciding factor. At the same time, interns who felt committed to the organization because they were treated well are 7.14 times more likely to accept a job offer than those who don’t feel that sense of commitment, according to NACE’s 2023 Student Survey. Ultimately, 80% of employers see their internship programs as the best return on investment for finding talent.

Global mobility programs are frequently getting involved with intern support. That's why Plus is excited to share our 2024 U.S. Domestic Intern Program Survey Report, which provides valuable insights into how global mobility programs are managing and guiding intern programs. The report covers various elements, including six major sections:

  • Survey overview and demographics
  • Mobility team involvement
  • Benefits provided
  • Work structure
  • Intern program challenges
  • Considerations for the future

We believe that the data in this report will help you make decisions about how mobility can be a key part of intern development. If you have any questions or would like to discuss the findings further, please don't hesitate to reach out to ConsultingServices@plusrelocation.com.

The Job Outlook survey has revealed that employers do value the college degree. Find this, and other insights in the 2024 Job Outlook survey, a forecast of hiring intentions of employers as they relate to new college graduates. We gather insights each year when NACE surveys its employer members about their hiring plans and other employment-related issues. These data help to project the market for new college graduates for the current class and to assess a variety of conditions that may influence that market. Note: Data for the Job Outlook 2024 survey were collected from August 2, 2023, through September 18, 2023.
